KARACHI: Lyari is bustling with festivity as a month long sporting activities commenced at the Peoples Sports Complex on Saturday evening under the aegis of Pakistan Rangers Sindh.
The activities which envisaged boxing, cycling, cricket and football, culminates on Aug 14 and coincides with the Independence Day.
Sportspersons belonging to all the 15 UC’s of district South and Rangers are competing in the spectacle named “Lyari Youth Festival”.
The Director General Pakistan Rangers Sindh Maj Gen Saeed Ahmed formally inaugurated the event. Bilqees Edhi and Faisal Edhi were prominent among others who attended the opening ceremony.
A record number of 393 pugilists have entered the boxing competition which takes place at Ustad Ali Mohammad Qambrani Stadium from July 18 to 28, secretary Sindh Boxing Association Asghar Baloch said on Sunday.
He said the boxing event will be held in four categories – boys under-14, juniors under-16, youth under-18 and seniors under-28.
According to him, the football event commenced at Gabol Park on Sunday while the cricket will start at Kakri ground on July 20. The cycling will take place on July 26, he added.
It is pertinent to mention that with the exception of cricket, Lyari is known for producing a galaxy of stalwarts in the other three disciplines.
