Pakistan reiterates its dedication to promoting mediation for enduring peace.

Pakistan said a revitalized relationship between the United Nations and regional organizations might revitalize international peace efforts and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting mediation as a shared responsibility on Thursday.
Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said in a statement given here at the Group of Friends on Mediation Ministerial Meeting with the theme “Re-affirming Cooperation between the UN and Regional Organizations in Mediation” that “mediation remains a highly impactful tool available in the UN Charter for peaceful settlement of disputes.”
“We support the efforts of this group to promote mediation and retain a high level focus on this vital aspect,” he added, expressing gratitude to Finland and Turkey for organizing the ministerial conference. “Mediation offers a pathway from conflict and confrontation to dialogue, compromise, and sustainable peace,” the minister stated. Reviving mediation as a pillar of preventive diplomacy is necessary at a time when mistrust and geopolitical rivalry are growing. He stated, “We live in a region where unresolved disputes continue to fester, so for Pakistan, mediation is not just an abstract principle but a desired goal.” One of the oldest issues on the UN Security Council’s agenda is still the conflict over Jammu and Kashmir.
The Kashmiri people have been waiting for the realization of their right to self-determination, which has been protected by multiple Security Council resolutions, for almost 80 years. In South Asia, regional stability is threatened when one party opposes mediation. He clarified that it is crucial to reconfirm one’s commitment to mediation, the Charter, and international law in these kinds of circumstances.
According to the minister, mediation provides a lasting and efficient means of achieving peace since it serves as a link between conversation and compromise, and between compromise and reconciliation, thereby realizing the goal of peaceful coexistence.
“Pakistan has consistently supported the peaceful resolution of conflicts via conversation, diplomacy, and mediation. We aimed to put mediation at the center of the Security Council’s activity during Pakistan’s July Presidency of the Council,” he noted. He noted that resolution 2788 on the “Peaceful Settlement of Disputes” was unanimously adopted by the Council, reinforcing mediation as a vital tool for preventing and resolving conflicts.
Additionally, we oversaw the issuance of a Presidential Statement under our Presidency that emphasized the significance of improved mediation collaboration between the Organization of Islamic collaboration and the Security Council. These results demonstrate Pakistan’s steadfast belief that communication and mediation are essential to a lasting peace,” he continued. The UN Charter and international law should be the cornerstone of all mediation efforts, according to Khawaja Asif. “We think the way forward requires: first, institutionalized coordination between the UN and regional organizations to harmonize mediation efforts; second, predictable and sustainable financing for mediation activities, including those of regional organizations to strengthen preventive diplomacy,” Asif stated.
“Remember that every conflict settled through mediation is a win for peace. He came to the conclusion that “every act of dialogue that saves lives is an investment in a more just and stable international order.”
