In a meeting with the UN chief, the prime minister reiterates Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism.

On the fringes of Friday’s UN General Assembly session, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss topics of shared interest.

The Prime Minister underlined Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to bolstering multilateralism during their friendly and amicable discussion, with the UN playing a pivotal role in tackling the world’s most serious issues.

The Prime Minister praised the UN’s role in bolstering global governance by giving developing nations a stronger voice, as well as the Secretary-General’s outstanding leadership in advancing world peace and stability.

The Prime Minister thanked the Secretary-General for recognizing the Government’s rescue and relief efforts during the recent devastating floods in Pakistan. He also emphasized the need for coordinated international actions, including the mobilization of additional climate finance, to lessen the effects of climate change on the most climate vulnerable nations, such as Pakistan.

The prime minister focused on topics that are crucial to Pakistan’s national and regional interests, especially the conflict over Jammu and Kashmir, the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) violations, and foreign-sponsored terrorism in Pakistan. In line with the Security Council’s resolutions, he called for a fair and amicable resolution to the Jammu and Kashmir conflict.

The Secretary-General’s leadership and earnest attempts to defuse the recent tensions between India and Pakistan were praised by the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister expressed grave worry about Gaza and reiterated Pakistan’s support for measures to halt the war immediately, provide humanitarian aid, and create a political window for an irreversible path to Palestinian independence.

The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s determination to keep contributing to regional and global peace and security as a member of the UN Security Council.

Pakistan’s strong voice and crucial involvement at the UN, notably its principled stances at the Security Council, were praised by the Secretary-General. They concurred that coordinated measures are required to further strengthen and expand the United Nations’ vital role in promoting world peace and development.
