Violation of the Official Secrets Act for divulging classified information

Concerning the unapproved and public release of private and sensitive information on social media, the federal government has taken strong notice.

Official Secrets Act prosecutions will apply to those who post private documents and other confidential material on social media.

According to a post made on his official X account by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, the dissemination of such information could be detrimental to Pakistan’s economic and strategic interests as well as its ties with friendly and neighbouring nations.

Furthermore, Asif stated that all those found guilty of the aforementioned crime would face legal action under the Official Secrets Act of 2023. The offence carried a two-year jail sentence and a fine, and strict measures would be taken against those directly or indirectly implicated.
