The following figures represent the cost of power per unit in India, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

Given the rising inflation in Pakistan and the consistent increase in power tariff, there is a curiosity among many individuals regarding the cost of electricity per unit in other South Asian nations such as India, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

The government led by the PML-N, which promised to provide free electricity, has imposed a substantial increase in prices on the general public.

Households in the country will now be required to pay more than Rs 65 per unit for power, which includes taxes and modifications. This will particularly impact low-income families, who will have to shoulder the burden of higher electricity bills.

Neighboring countries have considerably cheaper electricity rates compared to the substantial increase in electricity prices in Pakistan.

In Afghanistan, the price of electricity is 2.5 Afghanis (about Rs 3.92) per unit for up to 200 units of consumption. In Bangladesh, the rate for the same level of consumption is Tk 7.20 (roughly Rs 17.07) per unit. The tariff in India is Rs 6.29 per unit.

Nevertheless, in Pakistan, the tariff for electricity consumed by residential users has been raised from Rs 5.72 to Rs 7.12 per unit, along with an additional sales tax of Rs 48.84 per unit. Once the necessary changes and taxes are taken into account, the rate will surpass Rs 65 per unit, imposing a substantial burden on the general population.

Yesterday, the federal cabinet sanctioned a substantial hike in the power cost for residential clients who utilize 100 to 500 units per month.
