In relation to an abortive attempt to kill a politician or other government person in the United States, a Pakistani citizen with suspected ties to Iran has been prosecuted in the country, the Justice Department announced on Tuesday.

According to a U.S. official cited by CNN, FBI investigators thought that the plot’s targeted targets included former President Donald Trump and other current and former U.S. government leaders.

In a federal court in New York, 46-year-old Asif Merchant is accused with murder for hire.

A would-be assassin injured Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump during a July 13 campaign rally in Pennsylvania, leading US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to confess to Congress that both she and her organization failed.

In testimony before the House of Representatives Oversight Committee, Cheatle—who is being called out by Republicans for her removal—said, “We failed.” The most major operational failure at the Secret Service in decades, according to Cheatle, was the attempt on the life of former President Donald Trump on July 13.

She asserted that Trump’s security had increased ahead of the incident, despite Republican allegations that the Secret Service withheld resources to keep him safe.

One rallygoer was murdered and another was injured in the gunfire at an open-air campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which also hit Trump in the ear. Law authorities shot and killed 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, a nursing care aide, who was suspected of being the shooter. His reason for the shooting remains unclear.
