Lahore’s air pollution is still at an all-time high.
On Monday morning, the air quality index (AQI) measurement of 382 indicated that the pollution level in Lahore was at an all-time high, leaving residents in shock.
Although Lahore’s average air quality rating is lower than it was the day before, the city is nonetheless home to a concerning amount of pollution and is ranked among the most polluted in the world.
The city’s DHA region has been most impacted by air pollution, with an AQI rating of 777, leading to an AQI reading of 537.
Lahore’s primary schools will be closed for a week, the provincial government announced on Sunday, to protect kids from the harmful effects of air pollution.
In Lahore, citizens are experiencing severe health issues due to unprecedented air pollution, including burning eyes, coughing, and trouble breathing.
Health professionals have recommended that the public wear masks and glasses to prevent the negative effects of the hazardously polluted air.
In a report, AFP stated that Lahore’s air pollution levels on Saturday were more than 80 times higher than what the World Health Organization (WHO) considers tolerable.
Before falling to about 300 in the morning, the level of dangerous PM2.5 pollutants—fine particulate matter in the air that causes the most harm to health—peaked at 1,067. The WHO considers anything over 10 to be harmful.
“We have never achieved a 1,000 level,” Lahore’s top environmental protection official, Jahangir Anwar, told AFP.
The fog and pollution from low-grade diesel emissions, smoke from seasonal agricultural burning, and winter chilling have been engulfing Lahore for days.
Anwar predicted that the air quality index would stay high for the next three to four days.
Smog is most noticeable at the start of winter when colder, thicker air retains emissions from subpar fuels used to power the city’s ground-level factories and automobiles.
While an AQI rating between 201 and 300 is more dangerous, an AQI rating above 300 has been exceedingly hazardous. An AQI as high as 151-200 is deemed unhealthy.
