Six bills approved by the Senate and NA are approved by Acting President Gilani.
On Monday, the National Assembly and Senate passed six amendment legislation pertaining to the number of Supreme Court justices and the term of service heads, which Acting President Yousuf Raza Gilani has formally accepted.
These amendments are currently in force and have formally become law with the signing of the acting president.
The Pakistan Navy Act Amendment Bill 2024, the Army Act Amendment Bill 2024, and the Air Force Act Amendment Bill 2024 are among the recently approved amendments. Amendments to the service chiefs’ term, extended duration, and retirement age restriction are included in these three bills.
Acting President Gilani also approved the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Amendment Bill 2024, which increases the number of Supreme Court judges, expands the Islamabad High Court bench, and outlines updated procedural guidelines for the Supreme Court.
After the bill to raise the number of seats for SC justices was approved over concerns from the opposition, the National Assembly and Senate approved proposals on Monday to extend the terms of the services chiefs.
In order to raise the number of judges and prolong the tenure of the chiefs of the services, six legislation were passed by both chambers of parliament, and Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani reportedly approved them.
Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq oversaw the NA session, where emotions erupted and members of the ruling party and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) engaged in a physical brawl.
PTI members clashed with government officials during heated debates, resulting in a chaotic scene that was broken up by the intervention of a Sergeant-at-Arms.
Leading politicians, such as Federal Law Minister Atta Tarar and other Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) members, had argued angrily with the opposition members, forcing security forces to step in several times.
The altercation caused the NA session to be postponed until 11 am.
