PM Shehbaz departs for COP29 in Azerbaijan.
Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif departed for Azerbaijan on Monday in order to attend the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which is being held in Baku, and attend the “World Leaders’ Climate Action Summit.”
The prime minister was escorted out of the International Royal Terminal by Pakistani Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ahmed Farooq, Saudi Ambassador to Pakistan Nawaf bin Saeed Ahmad Al-Malkiy, and other diplomatic personnel, according to a press release from the PM Office Media Wing.
The prime minister will attend the conference on behalf of Pakistan during his three-day stay in Azerbaijan. The purpose of the conference is to draw attention to the issues facing nations that are negatively impacted by climate change and to emphasize measures to reduce climate pollution.
The risks that climate change poses to Pakistan will be emphasized by the prime minister.
On November 13, PM Shehbaz will speak at the World Leaders Climate Action Summit and participate in a number of high-level pre-summit events. He would also meet one-on-one with foreign leaders.
The Pakistan Pavilion will also host a number of high-level gatherings and roundtable discussions during COP29.
Additionally, the prime minister will take part in the high-level gathering held by Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, titled “Glaciers 2025: Action for Glaciers.”
At the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ high-level event on the rising global temperature, “Delivering Early Warning for All and Addressing Extreme Heat,” PM Shehbaz will also participate. Additionally, he will attend a luncheon organized by the President of Azerbaijan in honor of world leaders.
On the margins of COP-29, the prime minister will also meet bilaterally with international leaders to discuss problems facing Pakistan due to climate change, in addition to enhancing bilateral ties.
Alongside the prime minister are prominent officials such as PM’s Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, and Deputy Foreign Minister/Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar.
At the COP29, Pakistan will demand ambitious and well-balanced progress on all problems, including mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage, and implementation methods. In order to meet the climate targets of developing nations, it will look for steady funding. Additionally, Pakistan will emphasize the idea of equity and common but differentiated responsibility, as well as historical accountability, and urge developed countries to implement more significant emission reductions, according to a news statement from the Foreign Office Spokesperson.
