Publication of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan’s new regulations

After getting approval, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) formally repealed the regulations of 2010 and issued new regulations called the Judicial Commission of (Appointment of Judges) Rules 2024, which were then made public.

In accordance with the new regulations, the JCP will have a secretariat, which will be set up in the Islamabad Supreme Court building or at another location chosen by the chairperson. Every record of the commission will be kept up to date by the secretariat.

The panel will guarantee that selections are made on the basis of merit, considering elements like impartiality, integrity, experience, and professional competence. The commission will take into account a candidate’s performance, reporting abilities, impartiality, and honesty when assessing them.

Additionally, the new JCP regulations emphasized the significance of diversity and representation in appointments. A fair representation of all areas, genders, and religions will be reflected in appointments, according to the panel.

The chairperson will decide how many positions are open and solicit nominations during the appointment process. Appointment candidates may be nominated by any commission member. Along with keeping track of all expected and open posts, the commission will also notify the public as necessary.

The new regulations also described the procedure for appointing new judges, which will be determined by their impartiality, ethics, honesty, and merit. In addition, the panel will examine cases that might not have been taken into account in the first appointment process.
