Hassan Nawaz faces a £5.2 million tax penalty despite his recent bankruptcy.

Hassan Nawaz, the progeny of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has incurred a £5.2 million penalty from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) for intentional tax evasion, notwithstanding his recent declaration of bankruptcy.

According to the latest update on the UK government’s “Current List of Deliberate Tax Defaulters,” published on March 18, 2025, Nawaz failed to pay taxes amounting to approximately £9.4 million for the period between April 5, 2015 and April 6, 2016.

The £5.2 million sanction levied by HMRC underscores the gravity of the non-compliance, intensifying scrutiny of his financial matters.

The disclosure poses critical inquiries regarding the ramifications of Nawaz’s recent bankruptcy, potentially hindering efforts to recuperate the outstanding tax. According to UK insolvency legislation, although bankruptcy may eliminate specific obligations, penalties resulting from intentional tax cheating are generally more challenging to evade.

Nawaz, engaged in many business enterprises in the UK, has consistently been subject to investigation regarding his financial transactions.

Legal experts indicate that HMRC possesses many enforcement mechanisms to recoup unpaid taxes and penalties, including the potential for asset seizures. Nonetheless, due to Nawaz’s bankruptcy state, the procedure may be extended.
