According to ECP, Punjab will hold local government elections in December.

Punjab will hold its long-delayed local government elections in the final week of December 2025, according to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Following the hearing, the five-member commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, rendered the reserved ruling.

The Punjab government has been instructed to finish delineating the boundaries within two months, and the elections would be held in accordance with the 2002 Local Government Act.

To guarantee that elections are held on time, the ECP said that work on the delimitation process has already started.

The Chief Election Commissioner stated at the hearing that the Commission was embarrassed by the delay in holding local body elections in Punjab and Islamabad and that any more delays would not be accepted.

The ECP voiced displeasure with the response after Punjab’s Special Secretary for Local Government addressed the Commission and provided an explanation for the legislative delay.

The Commission pointed out that elections in Punjab have been postponed numerous times since the local bodies’ terms ended in 2021.

The Commission had finished delimitations three times, while local government laws had been revised five times, according to the ECP Secretary.

The ECP claimed that despite numerous reminders and consultations with the provincial authorities, polls could not be held because there was not yet finalized legislation.

In order to reestablish the province’s local governance structure, the Commission’s decision made it plain that Punjab’s local body elections would now take place in the final week of December 2025 without further postponement.
