Defeating South Africa, New Zealand secured their maiden Title of Women’s T20 World Cup

The 2023 runners-up, South Africa, were unable to chase the 159-run goal and hence lost the trophy for the second time.

With her outstanding performance, Amelia Kerr won Player of the Match. She scored 43 runs off of 38 balls and took 3 wickets for 24 runs to demonstrate her all-around skills.

With a target of 159, South Africa made a quick start with to an opening partnership of 51 runs between captain Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits.

But to stop South Africa’s momentum, Fran Jonas gave the breakthrough by getting rid of the British, who scored 17 runs off of 18.

After Amelia Kerr took advantage of Laura Wolvaardt, who had top-scored with 33 off 27, South Africa was left reeling at 59-2.

With well-timed wickets, the bowlers from New Zealand prevented South Africa from mounting a resistance and held them to 126-9.

Only Annerie Dercksen (10) and Chloe Tryon (14) reached double figures for South Africa, aside from the opening batters.

Jonas, Eden Carson, and Brooke Halliday each took one wicket, while Rosemary Mair and Kerr claimed three wickets for New Zealand.

Earlier, in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 final, South Africa allowed New Zealand to bat first and made a breakthrough in the second over.

Before Suzie Bates and Amelia Kerr combined to form a conservative combination of 37 runs, Ayabonga Khaka dismissed Georgia Plimmer (9) in the first session.

Bates was playing at 32 off 31 with three boundaries when Nonkululeko Mlaba broke the promising partnership.

Sophie Devine, the captain of New Zealand, was unable to contribute much to the total; after scoring six, she was defeated by Nadine de Klerk.

The team reached 127 when Brooke Halliday and Amelia Kerr, who had already settled in, combined to add 57 runs for the fourth wicket from 44 balls.

With three boundaries in Halliday’s thrilling 38 runs from 28 balls, Chloe Tryon stopped New Zealand’s momentum.

Amelia Kerr, who had scored 43 runs off 38 balls and four boundaries, was bowled out by Mlaba in the subsequent over.

The team reached 158-5 in their allotted 20 overs when Maddy Green hit an undefeated 12 off 6 balls.

Ayabonga Khaka, Chloe Tryon, and Nadine de Klerk each claimed one wicket, while Nonkululeko Mlaba topped South Africa’s bowling attack with figures of 2-31.
