Following a 12-hour surgical procedure, conjoined twins were separated in Karachi.
It took 10 to 12 hours to complete, and a team of 10 medical specialists, including four renowned surgeons from Karachi’s top hospitals, had to work together.
The twins were born at a private hospital on September 10. According to their grandmother, Ghulam Mustafa and his wife had to deal with financial difficulties to pay for the required surgery.
The hospital administration, however, covered all related expenses, according to a NICH official.
The operation was carried out by specialists from the Sindh Institute of Child Health and Neonatology (SICHN), the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Aga Khan University Hospital, and NICH.
According to NICH Executive Director Dr. Nasir Suddle, private hospital professionals were also contacted during the planning stage.
“Despite many difficulties, the procedure was eventually successful because of everyone’s combined effort and skill. Both twins are in stable health,” Prof. Suddle said.
The twins’ grandma expressed her gratitude to the medical staff and supporters. “The operation was beyond our means. I am appreciative of everyone who helped us and the medical professionals who devoted their lives to preserving our girls,” she said.
