Orders against PIA privatization are revoked by the SC
The plea was considered by a constitutional bench of the Supreme Court led by Justice Amin-ud-Din. The extra attorney general of Pakistan claimed in his arguments before the Supreme Court’s constitutional bench that the privatization process was the reason why the PIA had stopped hiring new specialists.
“The government is planning a second attempt to privatize PIA after a lower bid, and the restriction on flight operations in Europe is now lifted,” he added.
The SC bench leader responded to this point by saying, “The government may now receive a favorable rate in the privatization process.”
After taking them into confidence, the SC decided to proceed with PIA privatization, said Justice Mandokhail, another bench member.
Later, the court reversed its anti-privatization ruling.
The first attempt by the Pakistani government to sell the PIA was unsuccessful, as it only got one bid of Rs. 10 billion. When the bid was rejected, the government sent the privatization issue back to the cabinet.
The failed sale of Pakistan International Airlines was previously attributed to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) by Federal Minister for Privatization Aleem Khan.
During a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Privatization, which was chaired by Senator Talal Chaudhry in Islamabad, he made this statement.
The discussion covered the rationale for the PIA sale’s lower bid. Before taking over as the minister of privatization, Aleem Khan stated that the PIA privatization process had begun on November 28, 2023.
