Promoting renewable energy is a critical goal, according to the PM.

The government’s solar energy strategy will not change, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated on Sunday, stressing that promoting renewable energy is still a “top priority.”

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) released the statement during a meeting in Islamabad to assess developments regarding the Power Division, which was led by the Prime Minister.

This announcement comes after the government recently decided to lower the repurchase rate for solar electricity that is meter-metered from Rs27 per unit to Rs10 per unit.

The “significant increase in the number of solar net-metering consumers” and the ensuing financial burden on grid consumers, according to the government, made this adjustment unavoidable.

Under the new structure, solar-generated electricity imported into the grid will be billed at standard peak and off-peak rates, inclusive of taxes and surcharges, while exported units will be bought back at the revised rate of Rs10 per unit.

However, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the government’s stance on solar energy remained unchanged. He said that “promoting renewable energy remains a priority” and asked officials to provide “facts and figures” to allay any misunderstandings over the solarization strategy.

In keeping with current changes in the power sector, the Prime Minister also declared that the government would shortly implement a comprehensive relief package targeted at lowering public electricity expenses.

PM Shehbaz gave authorities instructions to expedite the privatization of power distribution firms and address any operational or legal concerns pertaining to the closure of generating companies.

In order to develop a more comprehensive energy sector plan, he also emphasized the significance of improved collaboration between the Power Division, Water Resources Division, and Petroleum Division.
