Punjab intends to implement an e-taxi service based on the Chinese model.

Following the successful EV taxi models in China, the Punjab government has announced plans to introduce an electric taxi service throughout the state. As directed by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the effort will be supervised by Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan.

The Punjab Transport Department has contacted many electric vehicle manufacturers to start the program’s preparatory work. Both the Deewan Group and the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) have expressed interest in participating in the project.

Implementation will proceed in phases, with initial operations focusing on Lahore and divisional headquarters before expanding to other major cities across Punjab. The service will operate around the clock, providing continuous transportation options for residents.

Drivers can purchase electric vehicles through the program’s flexible payment options, which include installment plans and down payments. With this strategy, prospective taxi drivers will have easier access to car ownership.

The creation of this project was motivated by environmental concerns, specifically the increase in air pollution caused by car emissions. In addition to lowering urban air pollution, the program is expected to provide new job possibilities in the transportation industry, according to the transportation department.

Specific launch dates and car price structures for the scheme have not yet been disclosed by the government.
