Sonia the elephant is buried at Karachi’s Safari Park.
As Mayor Karachi himself was present to supervise the procedure, a team of veterinary professionals headed by Dr. Ghulam Mustafa performed Sonia’s post-mortem.
Dr. Amir Khalil, the leader of the international animal protection group “Four Paws,” watched the proceedings over a video link.
“The blood and body parts of the elephant have been taken and are being sent to the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore, for examination,” stated Safari Park officials, adding that “the laboratory reports will determine the true cause of Sonia’s death.”
The Safari Park administrators also stated that the comprehensive post-mortem report would be released in four weeks.
Although it was initially thought that the Four Paws would perform the post-mortem, authorities decided to do it right away out of concern about the body’s decay.
