The burial of Prince Karim Aga Khan in Egypt

On Sunday, the Aga Khan IV was buried in Aswan, Egypt, in a private ceremony.
The Ismaili religious community and the Aga Khan Development Network confirmed Prince Karim al-Hussaini’s passing on Tuesday.
His son, 53-year-old Rahim Al-Hussaini, has been named as the Aga Khan V, the spiritual leader of the world’s millions of Ismaili Muslims, in according with his father’s will.
On Saturday, a private funeral service took place at the Ismaili community center in Lisbon attended by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Spain’s King Emeritus Juan Carlos and Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
Prince Karim’s family was greeted by the Aswan governor on Saturday at the provincial airport in southern Egypt.
Maj. Gen. Ismail Kamal stated, “When his will was opened, it was discovered that he had asked to be buried in Aswan close to his grandfather, Sultan Muhammad Shah, and his grandmother, Om Habiba.”
As Prince Karim’s body was transported in a vehicle, Ismaili mourners marched while bells rung during the funeral service in the southern Aswan province of the nation. They placed his body aboard a yacht on the Nile River after carrying it in a white shroud.
In July 1957, two weeks after his grandfather, the Aga Khan III, unexpectedly named Prince Karim the heir to the family’s throne, Queen Elizabeth bestowed upon him the title of “His Highness.”
