The Chief Justice of the PHC pledges to introduce a new framework for prison reforms.

Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim of the Peshawar High Court announced the introduction of a new model for jail reforms in partnership with the police, home department, and other stakeholders.

He announced to the media, stating, “We will develop our own model and will not emulate any other country.”

He emphasized the overcrowding in many prisons in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where facilities designed for 100 convicts are accommodating up to 400 prisoners.

He noted that numerous prisons are deficient in appropriate amenities, particularly in light of the seasonal weather conditions. He additionally advocated for the enhancement of amenities in women’s and juvenile correctional facilities.

The chief justice expressed concern over the absence of adequate legislation governing the operation of Dar-ul-Aman (shelter homes).

Justice Ibrahim stated that 90 percent of individuals incarcerated for drug offenses are addicts, so imposing a significant strain on the correctional facilities.

He emphasized that these folks have to be situated in rehabilitation centers rather than prisons. He also advocated for the creation of specialized rehabilitation institutions for substance abusers.

He additionally stated that measures are being implemented to diminish the accumulation of unresolved cases.
