“The government is considering restricting power subsidies to BISP holders.”

The Ministry of Finance is examining a proposal to limit the power subsidy to Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) recipients exclusively, the Senate Standing Committee on Finance was notified on Wednesday.
The committee was briefed by officials on the present consumer power subsidy system during the meeting, which was presided over by Senator Saleem Mandiwalla. They clarified that the planned adjustment is being worked on by the Ministry of Finance, the Power Division, and other pertinent agencies.
Senator Anusha Rahman Ahmad stated that she is against electricity subsidies in general because they lead to dependency and may turn recipients into “beggars.”
Karachi industry members who attended the meeting expressed concerns about what they saw as discrimination in the allocation of electricity subsidies.
The chairman of the committee responded by declaring that the matter would be forwarded to the Power Committee for additional analysis.
