The IAEA commends Pakistan’s cooperation and advancements in its peaceful nuclear program.

Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), recognized Pakistan’s peaceful nuclear program and the nation’s consistent advancements and strong collaboration with the Agency.
Mr. Grossi emphasized Pakistan’s accomplishments in growing its civil nuclear energy capability in a social media post after meeting with Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar, Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), on the fringes of the 69th IAEA General Conference in Vienna.
Pakistan’s nuclear power program is moving “at a good pace,” he noted, especially with the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit-5 (C-5) still under development.
In February 2025, the DG recalled seeing the first concrete pour at the location, which he considered a significant turning point in Pakistan’s attempts to improve energy security by using clean and sustainable nuclear power.
The PAEC Chairman and the IAEA Director General discussed areas of collaboration under several Agency programs during the meeting.
These included Rays of Hope, which seeks to increase access to nuclear medicine and radiotherapy for cancer treatment throughout the Asia-Pacific region, and Atoms4Food, which uses nuclear technology to enhance crop yields, food safety, and pest management.
Mr. Grossi praised Pakistan’s strong participation in the Agency, particularly in training, capacity-building, and the use of nuclear expertise for socioeconomic advancement. Pakistan remains a key partner in the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology, he said.
In keeping with IAEA guidelines and national development priorities, the PAEC Chairman reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to the peaceful uses of nuclear technology. He emphasized that by supplying dependable, low-carbon electricity, Pakistan’s nuclear power facilities contribute significantly to the energy mix while operating under the strictest safety regulations. The IAEA’s mission to advance nuclear technology for peace, health, and prosperity is closely connected with PAEC’s operations, he continued.
The discussion also offered a chance to talk about Pakistan’s contributions to regional IAEA projects, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, where other Member States are sharing Pakistan’s nuclear application experience.
Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to working with the IAEA and Member States to promote sustainable development, peaceful nuclear cooperation, and better living conditions for people in the region.
