The KP government introduces a new automobile registration and license plate system.

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administration has implemented a new automobile registration and license plate system throughout the province, in accordance with the federal model.

The new method has been adopted immediately and will be completely enforced after November 30, 2025, as per an official announcement from the Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Department.

According to the amended regulations, vehicle registration numbers and license plates will be associated with the owner’s Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) rather than the vehicle’s chassis number.

The project seeks to mitigate car misuse in illicit activities while improving convenience for owners through a streamlined registration and transfer process.

Vehicle owners are urged to register their acquired vehicles in their names within three months, while sellers must ensure correct ownership transfer to the new purchaser. Noncompliance may lead to sanctions or issues in subsequent vehicle purchases.

Revised Regulations for License Plates and Smart Cards

According to the new regulations, upon the sale of a vehicle, the CNIC-linked registration copy or smart card will be disabled, although it will remain with the former owner until it is reassigned.

Owners may transfer their registration number and plates to a newly acquired vehicle, while deactivated numbers can be preserved for a maximum of three years, contingent upon the completion of yearly biometric verification.

If the number is not reallocated within three years, it will be annulled, and the registration document, smart card, and license plates must be returned to the registering authority.

The department has implored the public to adhere to the new method to prevent legal complications and to enhance the regulation and security of car ownership in the province.
