The PHC requests an answer from the ECP regarding the Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The Peshawar High Court has instructed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to provide its statement about the execution of Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The hearing, led by KP High Court Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim and Justice Waqar Ahmed, addressed a petition regarding the conduct of Senate elections in the province.

The petitioner’s attorney indicated that at the previous hearing, the Election Commission sought an extension to establish a date for the elections. The ECP’s attorney stated that the Commission had deliberated on the issue and conducted multiple sessions concerning the Senate elections.

The ECP’s attorney additionally notified the court that a meeting regarding the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Senate elections occurred on December 10, with consultations still in progress. A review of reserved Senate seats is awaiting consideration by the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim stated that the Election Commission should be allotted two weeks to conclude the matter. However, the ECP’s lawyer requested more time, suggesting that the Supreme Court might also issue a decision on the matter.

The Chief Justice stated that the court could not provide indefinite time and mandated the ECP to submit its response by January 16.

On March 28, the ECP resolved to postpone the Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa owing to the Speaker of the Provincial Assembly’s inability to deliver the oath to the newly elected Senators.
