Trump and Starmer praise the strengthening of their “special relationship” with investments.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump celebrated the strengthening of their countries’ “special relationship” on Thursday, claiming that a series of agreements totaling 250 billion pounds had rendered the ties “unbreakable.”

The two leaders welcomed and commended some of the top names in U.S. and UK business at the beginning of a business reception for their investments in transactions ranging from energy to technology, which helped to strengthen links between the two countries.

Trump called the second day of his historic second state visit to Britain a “exquisite honor” following a day filled with pomp and circumstance, which included a “fantastic” state banquet with King Charles at Windsor Castle.

Starmer and Trump celebrated the unveiling of a record 150 billion pound ($205 billion) package of U.S. investment into Britain, which is part of a larger 250 billion pound package that officials say will benefit both parties, while sitting next to each other in a marquee in the grounds of Starmer’s Chequers country home.

Trump praises the UK’s “unbreakable bond.”

“This is a great day for the special relationship,” Starmer remarked, expressing gratitude to the corporate executives, who included Emma Walmsley of GSK and Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia.

“A celebration of what has gone before, of course, but more than that, a moment to deliver investments, jobs and deals which will improve people’s lives now and light up the special relationship for years to come.”

Trump was just as talkative. “The ties between our countries are priceless.” We’ve taken several actions that will benefit both nations financially. Regardless of what we’re doing now, I believe our bond is unbreakable. It seems indestructible to me.

In order to attract U.S. capital, expand its infrastructure, and boost the economy, Starmer has positioned Britain as a place for American investment, focusing on its financial services, technology, and energy industries.

He may have accepted that steel tariffs would not be lowered any more, but he was eager to promote the larger agreements, such as a new technology agreement with Microsoft, Nvidia, and OpenAI that pledged 31 billion pounds ($42 billion) and 100 billion pounds from Blackstone.

There are risks associated with press conferences.

In a tribute to the U.S. leader’s mother’s Scottish ancestry, Starmer and his wife Victoria had earlier welcomed Trump cordially at his Chequers country home to the music of bagpipes. However, the meeting is not without danger.

Journalists may question the two leaders about the late sexual offender Jeffrey Epstein during their press conference later on Thursday.

After his close relationship with Epstein was revealed and Trump’s relationship with the late financier was also questioned, Starmer was obliged to fire Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States last week.

Evie Aspinall, head of the British Foreign Policy Group research group, stated, “Starmer is having a difficult time at home and he needs a positive international narrative and to bring Trump on board on key issues.”

According to her, Trump would want to demonstrate the importance of having a tight relationship with Starmer. “For both sides, they realise there is a lot to be gained.”

Additionally, Starmer hopes that Trump’s pleasure in attending the state banquet would prevent the U.S. leader from venturing into more delicate topics, like Britain’s stance on Israel and its regulations regarding online safety.

Trump stated during the event on Wednesday that Britain “must continue to stand for the values and the people of the English speaking world” since it had “laid the foundations of law, liberty, free speech, and individual rights” under its empire.

He applauded the late-night host Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension a few hours later for remarks he made regarding the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Trump has put pressure on media outlets to remove offensive material from their programming.

THE TWO WILL TALK ABOUT GAZA AND UKRAINE.

In an effort to convince the U.S. leader to take more aggressive action against Russia for its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Starmer will also attempt to shift the conversation to international issues.

When Trump referred to Russia as “the aggressor” in the war this weekend, he appeased Europe. However, he is now insisting that Europe cease all imports of Russian oil before he will agree to stronger penalties against Moscow.

Although he told reporters he did not mind Starmer “taking a position,” Trump has also criticized several European nations for “rewarding Hamas” by recognizing a Palestinian state.

“Those two geopolitical areas are likely to be the friction points in the conversations,” commented Aspinall, a political analyst. “There will be some awkward moments in those conversations.”
