Under COAS Asim Munir, the Pakistan Army accomplished significant milestones in 2024.
Under the command of General Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military), the Pakistan Army accomplished notable triumphs in 2024.
Security forces and law enforcement agencies conducted more than 59,775 intelligence-based operations (IBOs) during the year. Targeting terrorists and those who assist them, these operations killed 925 militants, including important individuals like Abu Yahya, Ali Rehman alias Taha Swati, and Fida-ul-Rehman alias Lal.
Additionally, 73 of the most wanted terrorists were neutralised, hundreds of arrests were made, and 14 militants turned themselves in to become part of the mainstream in the country.
Security personnel carried out an average of 169 operations each day, averting several possible catastrophes, including the capture of two suicide bombers, according to official figures.
A firm position against terrorism
General Munir was adamantly opposed to terrorism, especially in light of Afghanistan’s cross-border dangers. While voicing concerns about autonomous terrorist operations coming from Afghan territory, the Army Chief reaffirmed the significance of safeguarding Pakistani lives and interests above all else.
The foreign press celebrated General Munir’s leadership and emphasised his resolve to destroy the terrorist infrastructure, praising him as a strong voice against extremism.
In addition to fighting terrorism, the Pakistan Army increased its efforts to fight extortion, hoarding, illegal smuggling, and electricity theft. These actions, which were carried out in coordination with state agencies, led to a significant decrease in these types of crimes. The Army Chief justified the harsh measures by emphasising that mafias engaged in these activities function as facilitators of terrorism.
Diplomatic and financial successes
2024 was a year of improved relations and more foreign investment for Pakistan in the diplomatic arena. One of the highlights was being able to successfully host the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting, which brought leaders from China, Russia, and other regional countries to Islamabad. A notable indication of diplomatic interaction amid tense bilateral relations was the attendance of India’s foreign minister.
Pakistan expressed solidarity for oppressed people in Gaza, Lebanon, and Kashmir through successful military diplomacy, earning recognition at the UN. Increased remittances, lower inflation, and an all-time high in the stock market were all results of improved ties with important nations.
One important step in tackling economic issues was the creation of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC). The National Logistics Cell (NLC) helped to strengthen regional trade by facilitating important commercial agreements, especially with Central Asia, Russia, and the UAE.
Reforms to the law and information integrity
In order to combat the proliferation of false information and fake news, new laws encouraging responsible freedom of expression were passed in 2024. General Munir highlighted the detrimental impact of unregulated narratives on societal values, stressing the need for robust measures to uphold integrity in public discourse.
The leadership of General Asim Munir has instilled hope for a stable and prosperous Pakistan. With coordinated efforts across military and civilian spheres, the achievements of 2024 pave the way for peace and stability in 2025.
