Saif asserts that smaller provinces’ interests must be safeguarded in things pertaining to canals.

Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, the information adviser for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stated on Friday that when it comes to canal-related issues, the interests of smaller provinces should be given particular weight.

Adding that the Chashma Right Bank Canal (Lift-cum-Gravity Project) was approved by the Council of Common Interests (CCI) in 1991, Saif said in a statement that the Chashma Right Bank Lift Canal project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa should not be connected with new canal projects in the CCI.

He added that although canals had been built in the other three provinces as a result of the CCI’s ruling, the project’s execution in KP had not yet been completed. Additionally, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has guaranteed 35% of the project’s finance.

“Any attempt to make the Chashma Right Bank Canal project controversial in the new canal dispute would be strongly opposed,” the provincial adviser continued.

He continued, “This project will help bring millions of acres of bare land in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s southern districts under cultivation.”
