Complaints over ‘Eidi’ disrupt Eid travel

With the rise in intercity travel and a significant influx of travelers preceding Eid, grievances have emerged regarding transporters imposing charges exceeding the established tariffs at certain bus terminals, while some passengers reported being solicited for additional payments under the guise of “Eidi.”

A multitude of travelers traveling to Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and other regions of the country voiced apprehension regarding fare increases. Several individuals said that, notwithstanding the presence of inspectors, certain transporters continued to attempt overcharging, particularly during evening hours.

Upon being reached, the spokesman for the Islamabad district administration stated that the authorities has acknowledged the matter and initiated surveillance activities at all principal bus terminals.

Officials report that multiple teams, headed by assistant commissioners, are inspecting terminals, including Faizabad and 26 Number stop, to deter overcharging. In this context, Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon has mandated that all assistant commissioners and magistrates maintain their presence at bus stands during the Eid influx.

He stated that any transporter found soliciting a fare beyond the sanctioned amount will encounter prompt repercussions. He also implored citizens to refrain from paying any amount over the official rate.

“Should any driver or operator request additional payment, report it immediately,” he stated, emphasizing that passengers ought to collaborate with the administration to eradicate unlawful acts. The administration’s initiative seeks to facilitate seamless travel and safeguard passengers against fare exploitation during the peak holiday season, the official stated.

District of Columbia Irfan Memon also underscored the necessity of ensuring that passengers are handled with respect. “It is our duty to ensure an equitable and respectable experience for all travelers,” he stated.

Terminal operations encompass random inspections, passenger inquiries regarding fares, and the validation of fare charts exhibited at ticket counters. Transporters were cautioned or penalized on multiple occasions for noncompliance with regulations.

The deputy commissioner has urged the public to report any infractions directly to the assistant commissioners stationed at the terminals.

He stated that such grievances are being promptly addressed, with transporters either facing penalties or being prohibited from continuing their operations. The administration has established hotline numbers and complaint counters at key terminals to assist passengers.

Specialized units have been established to oversee transportation operations during busy periods. The administration has cautioned transport companies and terminal operators that stringent measures will be enforced if any infractions are revealed.
