Cabinet secretary: Rightsizing drive to save Rs31 billion in the upcoming fiscal year

Cabinet Secretary Kamran Ali Afzal estimates that the government’s rightsizing plan will save more than Rs31 billion in the upcoming fiscal year.
Saleem Mandviwalla, the chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance, was briefed by Afzal, who disclosed that 32,070 government positions had already been eliminated and that another 7,724 were planned.
7,305 jobs were cut, with the majority falling into Grade-1 level.
Four positions were eliminated in grades 21 and 22, and hundreds more were let go in classes 17 through 20. Even the senior grades were not exempt.
The cabinet secretary emphasised that improving performance and efficiency in government departments is necessary; cutting the fat would not be sufficient.
The administration has doubled the number of ministers who “sit idle” doing virtually nothing, according to committee member Anusha Rehman.
