A data breach affects over 180 million users worldwide, including those in Pakistan.

In one of the most significant worldwide data breaches in recent history, sensitive information, including passwords, of over 180 million users from prominent firms such as Google, Facebook, and Apple has been hacked.

The concerning event has compelled Pakistan’s National Cyber Emergency Response Team (N-CERT) to release an urgent caution to all users and organizations nationwide.

The advice indicates that the data breach encompasses information from government portals and widely used social media platforms, including Instagram and Snapchat. N-CERT cautioned that the compromised data, now housed in an insecure database, may be leveraged via automated cyberattacks, endangering millions of users to identity theft, account breaches, and more cyber invasions.

The alert underscored that both private users and governmental entities, including financial accounts, are susceptible and must implement prompt preventative measures. Pakistani users are strongly advised to promptly change their account passwords and activate two-step verification to bolster account security.

The alert warned that passwords must not be disseminated by email or stored in insecure storage. It further recommended the use of trusted password managers to safeguard credentials and advised regular updates to antivirus and security software.

N-CERT further advised users to observe atypical login activity and to report any suspicious behavior without delay. Moreover, governmental agencies and sensitive organizations have been urged to promptly identify and notify impacted users.

The advise cautioned that neglecting to take essential security measures could compromise the integrity of the national digital infrastructure and adversely affect important services.

Cybersecurity specialists have emphasized the necessity for increased attention, as automated assaults may soon exploit the exposed data.
