The nation commemorates the 27th Youm-e-Takbeer today.

Today (Wednesday), Youm-e-Takbeer, commemorating Pakistan’s atomic detonations in 1998, is being marked with a commitment to enhance the nation’s economic and military strength.

The day is annually marked on May 28 to recognise the nuclear tests conducted on that date in 1998, which established the nation as the seventh nuclear power globally and the first Islamic state with a nuclear arsenal.

Pakistan executed nuclear tests at the Rasko Hills in the Chaghi area in Balochistan in retaliation to five nuclear detonations carried out by India, which jeopardised Pakistan’s security.

These nuclear tests conveyed a definitive message to the world that, although Pakistan is a peace-loving nation, it cannot neglect its defence requirements and is equipped to confront any challenge.

The detonation of nuclear bombs on May 28, 1998, marked the culmination of a bold endeavour undertaken by Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto to render the nation’s defence impervious to its principal adversary, India.

The programme commenced with meagre resources nevertheless an unwavering determination and fervour to establish the country as a sovereign and robust state, impervious to coercion by hostile forces.

The aspirations of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and the nation were realised in 1998 when then-Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif resolutely faced all dangers to induct Pakistan into the nuclear club by detonating a bomb at Chagai.
