Assist accident victims without worrying about facing legal issues: IG

KARACHI: Following a terrible traffic accident in the Shrafi Goth neighbourhood of Malir, Inspector General of Sindh Police Ghulam Nabi Memon has voiced grave concern about the public’s failure to help SZABIST Assistant Professor Iftikhar Ahmed.

Mobile phone footage of the event, which went viral on social media, showed the man stuck under a caravan without any help from onlookers.

IG Memon stated that prompt medical assistance for the injured professor could have saved a valued life, according to a statement released by police spokeswoman Syed Saad Ali. “Helping accident victims is not just a humanitarian act – it is a moral, legal, and religious obligation for every citizen,” the inspector general said.

He underlined that fatalities that may have been avoided are frequently caused by severe bleeding, serious injuries, and needless delays. “Do not let the fear of legal complications stop you from helping,” he said. “Saving one life is like saving all of humanity – this is not just a good deed, it is an act of faith.”

The IG added that it is unethical to be mute or passive in the face of such crises. “Every life counts. Don’t be a mute witness; take action,” he said.

He stated that citizens who assist the injured are heroes and would receive safety and respect, and that law enforcement and civic organisations will provide their full assistance. “Police and civil agencies cannot fulfil their responsibilities without the active support of the public,” he stated. “Even a small effort can save a life – so take that step without hesitation.”

The announcement follows the release of widely shared video that shows Professor Iftikhar Ahmed stuck between a trailer’s wheels after an accident. The province’s chief police officer made this public appeal in response to the widespread outrage caused by the lack of rapid assistance.
