The OIC urges the preservation of the Indus Waters Treaty in light of tensions between India and Pakistan.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has expressed significant apprehension on the deteriorating security conditions in South Asia, emphasising the necessity to adhere to international accords, particularly the United Nations Charter, international law, and specifically, the Indus Waters Treaty.

A Pakistani legislative team provided an update to OIC ambassadors regarding the recent Indo-Pak conflict and its consequences during a high-level meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

In his address to the OIC permanent representatives, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari unequivocally dismissed India’s efforts to implicate Pakistan in the Pahalgam event without adequate enquiry or substantiation. He condemned the precipitate accusations, claiming that they were utilised to rationalise illegal military actions by India aimed at civilians and civilian infrastructure.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed profound concern at India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, cautioning that India’s attempt to weaponize water resources against Pakistan “must not be normalised.” He emphasised that such aggression jeopardises peace and security in the region.

Bilawal’s delegation to the UN advocates for Pakistan’s position over India’s unfounded propaganda.

The former foreign minister expressed gratitude to OIC member states for their endeavours in conflict de-escalation, mediation, and the establishment of a ceasefire. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to peace, tolerance, and diplomacy, advocating for the reinstatement of the Indus Waters Treaty, adherence to the ceasefire, and the renewal of extensive talks with India.

Bilawal Bhutto commended the OIC’s ongoing support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, underscoring that an equitable and enduring resolution of the Kashmir issue is essential for peace in South Asia. He urged the member nations to maintain their principled support for the legitimate rights of the Kashmiri people, including the right to self-determination in accordance with UN resolutions.

The OIC nations commended Pakistan for its transparent briefing and diplomatic initiatives focused on peaceful conflict resolution. They conveyed their sympathy with Pakistan and the Kashmiri populace, reiterating their endorsement for resolving unresolved matters in compliance with UN mandates.
