Omar Ayub Khan, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, submitted a letter on Wednesday to the Speaker, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, seeking information on the reference lodged against him and the Speaker’s subsequent decision.
In the correspondence, Omar Ayub has requested the legal and constitutional foundation of the reference, an authenticated copy of the reference, and the whole record of proceedings. He has requested an elucidation of the accusations and the constitutional basis for disqualification under Articles 62 and 63.
He also wanted a certified copy of the complete reference and the accompanying proof. The letter additionally requests information regarding the internal proceedings and file notations created throughout the decision-making process concerning the reference.
Ayub inquired about the issuance of any notices or the provision of an opportunity to present his clarification. The letter also challenges the validity of the reference if it relies on petitions submitted by third parties.
He additionally requested precedents concerning the discretionary authority of the Speaker under Article 63(2) and demanded full transparency and equity in the judicial proceedings by supplying all pertinent information. Ayub underscored the necessity of immediate provision of the record to uphold parliamentary integrity and foster democratic trust.
It is worth noting that a reference against Ayub was filed by Babar Nawaz, and NA speaker has forwarded the reference to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for further proceedings.
