Pakistan has been designated as the Vice-Chair of the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee.

– Pakistan has been designated Vice-Chair of the United Nations Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee, responsible for overseeing the execution of Resolution 1373 (2001) regarding global counter-terrorism initiatives, as stated by Pakistan’s mission to the UN on Wednesday.
Islamabad has actively upheld the values of the UN Charter and significantly contributed to international peace and security, notably as a main troop provider to UN peacekeeping missions globally. Pakistan was elected to the UN Security Council in June 2024, succeeding Japan for the Asian seat.
Pakistan, being one of the nations most impacted by terrorism, has suffered the loss of more than 80,000 lives and numerous injuries in the last two decades. The nation has consistently alleged that India aids terrorist organizations, including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), to execute assaults within Pakistan.
The relationship between the two nuclear-capable neighbors worsened after the murder of 26 tourists in Pahalgam.
Alongside its responsibilities in the Counter-Terrorism Committee, Pakistan has been designated Chair of the UN Security Council Committee formed under Resolution 1988 (2011), which monitors sanctions pertaining to the Taliban.
In a demonstration of its diplomatic involvement, Pakistan was appointed Co-Chair of the Security Council’s Informal Working Group on Documentation and Working Methods, as well as the newly established Informal Working Group on Sanctions. These groups seek to enhance openness, inclusivity, and the design and efficacy of UN sanctions regimes.
The Pakistani delegation noted, “These appointments signify acknowledgment of Pakistan’s active involvement with the UN system, especially its constructive role as an elected member of the Security Council.” “They also signify global recognition of Pakistan’s counter-terrorism initiatives.”
The mission underlined Pakistan’s dedication to collaborating with the United Nations and its member nations to maintain the UN Charter and promote global initiatives against terrorism.
