Start of Ramadan 2022 (1443 AH)
The Islamic calendar adopted by Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) is based on calculations with Ittihadul-Mataali’ concept for the sake of global unity. FCNA decided to follow The European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR), which states that the sighting is not a requirement but just the means of ascertaining the beginning for a new month, and that is now attained by exact calculations. The criteria are that after conjunction somewhere on the globe, at local sunset, the angle between sun and moon should be at least 8° and moon should be at least 5° above horizon. If these conditions are met, the month starts the next day, otherwise the month starts on the day following next day.
On the basis of this method the dates of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr for the year 1443 AH are established as follows:
Ramadan 1443 AH: The Astronomical New Moon is on Friday, April 1, 2022, at 6:24 Universal Time. On that day, everywhere in North and South America at sunset the elongation is at least 8 degrees and moon is at least 5 degrees above the sun. Therefore, first day of Ramadan 1443 is on Saturday, April 2, 2022, insha’Allah.
Eid al-Fitr 1443 AH: The Astronomical New Moon is on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at 20:28 UT. Universal Time. On that day there is no place on earth where at sunset the elongation is 8 degrees and moon is 5 degrees above the sun. Therefore Shawwal 1443 cannot start the next day. Hence first day of Shawwal is on Monday, May 2, 2022, insha’Allah. Eid al-Fitr will be on Monday, May 2, 2022.
