India cannot unilaterally halt the Indus Water Treaty: Hussain Mushahid

Mushahid Hussain Syed, a prominent politician and former lawmaker, stated on Wednesday that India cannot revoke or suspend the 1960 World Bank-mediated Indus Water Treaty.

Mushahid Hussain claimed that India was suspending the Indus Water Treaty because of the Pahalgam tragedy. He claimed that it is against international law to suspend the Indus Water Treaty.

It is intolerable, he argued, that India has unilaterally suspended the Indus Water Treaty. According to him, the Indus Water Treaty cannot be unilaterally stopped or terminated.

India shouldn’t hold Pakistan responsible for its security failure, he said. He further urged that the UN secretary general be made aware of the unfounded accusations made against Pakistan by India.

According to Mushahid Hussain, India had previously made baseless accusations against Pakistan. He claimed that it would be equivalent to going to war to cut off Pakistan’s water supply. He stated that Pakistan had to be prepared to face any form of aggression.
