Following the Khuzdar school bus assault, the UNSC urges member states to work with Pakistan.

The “heinous and cowardly” terrorist attack on a school bus in Khuzdar, in Pakistan’s Balochistan region, was sharply denounced by the UN Security Council on Thursday. The council also called for the prosecution of those responsible.

The 15-member Council noted in a news release that “this reprehensible act of terrorism resulted in the grievous loss of at least 6 Pakistani nationals, including 4 school-going children, along with 53 injured, 39 of them children.”

In addition to wishing the injured a quick and complete recovery, the Security Council members conveyed their sincere sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the Pakistani government and people.

They emphasized the necessity of holding those responsible for these heinous acts of terrorism accountable and bringing them to justice, and they reiterated that terrorism in all of its forms and manifestations is one of the biggest threats to global peace and security.

In this context, the Council members called on all states to actively collaborate with the Pakistani government.

According to the statement, “the Security Council members reaffirmed that all acts of terrorism are unlawful and unacceptable, irrespective of their motivation, wherever, whenever, and by whom they are committed.”

In line with the United Nations Charter and other commitments under international law, such as international humanitarian law, international human rights law, and international refugee law, they reaffirmed the necessity for all States to use every available means to counteract terrorist threats to global peace and security.
