Beware, WhatsApp users: A warning on the dangers of hacking

The advice stated that cybercriminals are trying to employ dishonest tactics to trick consumers into disclosing sensitive information.

It further stated that the hackers deceive people by using phoney URLs and phoney verification codes. It is possible to use compromised accounts to perpetrate fraud, disseminate false information, or obtain private images and contact lists without authorisation.

According to the NCERT caution, the hackers are also utilising phoney reward offers and bank loyalty programs as attack bait.

In order to increase security, the NCERT advised users to install two-step verification in their WhatsApp settings and warned against fraudulent schemes that target them.

WhatsApp users have been cautioned to verify messages only through official and verified sources and to stay away from links that lead to address verification, prizes, or surveys.

When receiving communications from unfamiliar numbers, the NCERT advised exercising extra caution.
