The PTA discusses the repeal of cellphone taxes.

An important clarification on the taxes levied on bringing in cell phones from overseas has been provided by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

The specifics indicate that PTA has responded to the recent news regarding the tariffs on mobile phone imports, making it clear that, in contrast to some internet reports, there hasn’t been a formal decision to abolish these charges in Pakistan.

PTA stressed that the only people who will be free from these levies are Pakistanis living abroad. When a SIM card is inserted and the phone is restarted, non-PTA mobile users can temporarily register their devices.

Unverified mobile phones on cellular networks can now be blocked by the government thanks to a mechanism called the Device Identification Registration and Blocking mechanism (DIRBS).

PTA warned the public to avoid spreading false information by sharing unverified information and to instead rely on official sources for updates.

Notably, the government last year implemented a program that permits Pakistanis living abroad to register their phones through a temporary registration system for a tax-free 120 days per time. This program was designed to make it easier for foreigners to return home.

Social media users were spreading rumors that the government has eliminated all import duties on cell phones.
