The federal government has announced significant reductions in regulatory duties on 6,980 imported items, including vehicles, luxury goods, essential food products, and industrial raw materials, providing considerable relief for importers and consumers.
The amended duty framework is included in the Finance Bill 2025, designed to enhance trade, mitigate inflationary pressures, and promote lawful imports.
Reductions in duties on imported automobiles
Imported jeeps: Regulatory duty reduced from 15% to 10%
New imported sports vehicles: Decreased by 5%, now totaling 10%
New imported sports jeeps: Significant decline from 90% to 50%
Luxury vessels, ships, and cruises: Currently subjected to a mere 5% tax.
Luxury commodities experience significant reductions.
Branded sunglasses: Tariff decreased from 30% to 24%
Imported cosmetics: Reduced from 50% to 40%
Imported perfumes: Discount decreased from 50% to 40%
Branded watches: Decreased from 30% to 24%
Artificial jewellery: Currently 36%, a decrease from 40%
Sunblock, sunscreen, shaving cream, soap, and face wash: Duty reduced to 40% from 50%
Import tax on makeup products decreased from 55% to 44%
Residential and lifestyle merchandise
Imported washbasins and bathtubs: Tariff decreased from 30% to 24% and from 20% to 16%, respectively.
Bath washing tanks: Decreased from 30% to 24%
Tablecloths and netting: Decreased from 30% to 24%
Food and agricultural commodities
Imported milk, powdered milk, and yogurt are now subject to a 20% tax.
Cheese: Decreased to 40%, honey to 24%
Canned vegetables: Current duty is 5%
Dried bananas: Reduced to 10%
Dates, coconuts, Brazil nuts, and cashews: Decreased to 20%; fresh apples to 24%; peaches to 36%.
Duties on figs, pineapples, avocados, guavas, and mangoes have been decreased by 20%.
Duties on papaya and apples decreased from 45% to 36%
Nut varieties: Regulatory duty decreased by 4%.
Wheat flour, refined flour, and cornmeal: Current duty is 20%
Butter, milk cream, and milk fats: Decreased to 20%
Poultry and cod fish: Duty cut to 5%, frozen fish now 17.5%
Additional reductions
Reduction of regulatory duty on mobile phone SIM cards from 15% to 12%
Dog and cat food: Discounted by 5%, now priced at 40%
Bird eggs: Tariff reduced from 15% to 10%
Tobacco: Duty slashed by 40%
Officials say these reductions are intended to curb smuggling, encourage formal imports, and provide relief to both businesses and consumers. The government seeks to bolster local industries by diminishing regulatory duties on industrial raw materials, thereby maintaining competitive production costs.
