Doctors in Punjab have ceased their strike.
Since June 15, the Young Doctors Association (YDA) has been on strike in government hospitals in Punjab. The walkout was triggered by the detention of certain doctors following a fire incident at a teaching hospital in Sahiwal.
Dr. Shoaib Niazi, the President of the Young Doctors Association, announced that they will temporarily halt their ongoing strike for a single day. Today, we will put our position before the LHC, he stated.
Acting Chief Justice Shujaat Ali Khan of the Lahore High Court presided over a hearing on Thursday to consider a plea from the Young Doctors Association. The petition sought an inquiry into the Sahiwal incident.
During the hearing, Acting Chief Justice Shujaat Ali Khan expressed apprehension at observing the presence of doctors in the courtroom, stating that doctors should be attending to patients in hospitals rather than being in court.
Acting Chief Justice Shujaat Ali Khan instructed them to fulfill their responsibilities and ensure that they would cease the walkout.
Justice Shujaat Ali stated that Punjab is the most populous province, with a population of 120 million. He also emphasized that doctors and engineers are valuable resources for the country. He stressed that the current system is not a monarchy or reminiscent of the Mughal era. Furthermore, he assured that doctors will have comprehensive protection.
