Despite the crushing season, Peshawar’s sugar prices soar before Ramadan.
Despite the continuing sugarcane crushing season, Peshawar’s sugar costs have skyrocketed, rising by 20 rupees per kilogramme in the past month, raising concerns over Ramadan preparations.
At the Rampura wholesale market in Peshawar, a 50-kg bag of sugar now costs Rs. 7,400, up from Rs. 6,500 a month ago. Though the district government sets an official price ceiling of Rs. 145 per kilogram, retail prices have surpassed Rs. 150 per kilogram.
Although Peshawar’s wholesale markets show plenty of sugar, market watchers note that prices keep rising. Though these assertions remain unsubstantiated by independent sources, traders blame declining sugarcane output and continuous sugar exports for the price spike.
The price increase worries the locals, particularly as they prepare to consume more sweets during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan. Government representatives have been urged by the public to take the issue into account and implement reasonable price control measures.
Although the Peshawar district government has set official tariffs at Rs. 145 per kilogram, stores all around the city are not following these advised boundaries. The discrepancies between official and market rates highlight the challenges associated with implementing a retail price control system.
Emphasizing the crucial nature of the good during the fasting month, local customers have demanded quick assistance from authorities to stabilize sugar prices before the start of Ramadan.
