Margalla Hills: SC observes more than 100 unauthorized buildings in the National Park

A comprehensive report on the more than 100 unlawful hotels, eateries, and kiosks that are still open in Margalla Hills National Park has been mandated by the Supreme Court to be submitted by the Capital Development Authority (CDA).

It was disclosed during the hearing that, in spite of earlier court-ordered demolitions, around 134 unlawful establishments still exist in the park. According to the court, there are still infractions, and the CDA has been accused of not upholding its earlier orders.

The court questioned the CDA’s failure to take action to remove unauthorized constructions in the park, particularly in the vicinity of the Monal restaurant.

These unauthorized structures, including kiosks, are generating environmental problems, according to the DG of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Justice Jameel Mandokhel inquired as to whether the Supreme Court’s earlier rulings applied only to Monal or to all similar interpretations.

Justice Musarat Hilali drew attention to the park’s detrimental environmental effects, especially for its threatened species.

The court, led by Justice Aminuddin Khan, also emphasized that Margalla Hills is a protected area, and all construction activities in the park should be considered illegal. The hearing is still ongoing, and the CDA has been given a deadline to report on the issue.
