PHC gives ECP the last day to decide on the KP Senate elections.
On Thursday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) received a last warning from the Peshawar High Court (PHC) in relation to a petition calling for Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
The hearing was presided over by Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim and Justice Waqar Ahmed on a bench. The ECP was instructed by Chief Justice Ibrahim to have a meeting and submit a report to the court.
PTI leader Azam Swati filed the appeal, pointing up that while Senate elections were held in other provinces, KP has not yet seen them. According to Swati’s lawyer, KP is not fully represented because the province’s Senate seats are still unfilled.
“What date will the commission hold its meeting and schedule the elections?” Ibrahim, Chief Justice, asked. In response, ECP Special Secretary Mohammad Arshad asked for further time to provide a formal statement and told the court that a meeting will be arranged shortly to discuss the matter.
The petitioner’s attorney expressed concern about the province’s underrepresentation by highlighting the fact that 11 Senate seats from KP are still open. Regarding KP’s Senate standing, the ECP spokesperson admitted that just half of the seats are occupied at the moment.
